As chaplains, we continuously monitored the soldiers’ morale and advised the commander on the soldiers’ readiness and confidence on the battlefield. Morale is critical for resiliency in moving forward with a well-defined mission. We aimed to build a team culture with each soldier trained in their Military Occupation Specialty. They were working with a unit that, with the Army values, is essential for combat power. Providing sufficient access to quality equipment and suitable living conditions enhances the well-being of the soldiers in a hostile environment. We closely monitor each team member’s stressors to mitigate distractions and provide required individual care. Performing or providing for the Free Exercise of Religion helped many service members overcome obstacles by remaining connected to their faith traditions.
Family stressors are at the top of the chart to weaken soldiers’ morale focused on the commander’s intent. Communication with family members and solving problems is difficult overseas fighting a war. Some military personnel worry about ever returning home alive to fix difficulties in their home relationships. Others wonder if their spouse is faithful during their missions overseas. Financial crises often hit families in the most inopportune times. As chaplains, we counseled soldiers and helped provide solutions while combat operations continued. Communication with family members is essential for troop morale. In 2003, I experienced an opportunity to help service members better stay connected with family members and friends. I knew An Iraqi American as a friend in Maryland was in Baghdad, Iraq, aiming to set up the banking system with satellite communication for their phones and computers. He was willing to provide computers and establish a connection with the satellite capability so that our unit could communicate with their family and friends. The command approved the Iraqi Americans to set up a tent outside the living area with the rule no soldier would use the service in their living quarters. The computer tent increased morale and provided their family and friends access. A healthy family is critical to maintaining resiliency. The Satellite internet was high-speed. The computer cafe provided soldiers with an escape from war and a moment to reflect. Psychologically, this boosted morale. All wars had their vices. Our war was the computer age. Snail mail died. But every war has its cigars.
