Chaplain Starnes was raised in various places in the State of Georgia. He experienced God at five years old, which guarded his life from harm. God initially called him into ministry at 17 to only meet laughter with a no-way Lord. After high school, he joined the Air Force as an aircraft mechanic, only to face many troubles due to his reckless behavior. The Lord called him again. He was afraid and accepted his calling out of desperation. He immediately prepared daily in the Scriptures before entering formal education.
He pursued his Hebrew and Greek education at David Lipscomb University to translate Scripture. He attended Harding Graduate School of Theology to complete a Master of Divinity degree. This led to pastoral training at MD Anderson Cancer Center, Texas Children’s Hospital, and Saint Luke Episcopal Hospital. He began serving as an Army Reserve Chaplain in Houston, Texas.
Chaplain Starnes is known for his distinguished writing skills while in the Army Chaplaincy and graduate school. He was passionate about achieving career goals to serve soldiers better. Rhett volunteered for two tours in a hostile combat environment in Iraq beginning in 2003-2005. He provided ministry care for the wounded, honoring the dead, nurturing the living, and advising the command about troop morale and host nation religious activities. Rhett is mature, loyal, courageous, brave, and trusts God to go where angels fear to tread. With a heartfelt passion, He served troops in dangerous places without a weapon and grew as a Chaplain for greater responsibility. He served at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, from 2005-2009, honoring the dead and next of Kin Notifications, and particularly excelled in suicide prevention. Later, he served the Army Forces Command, working with the Force Providers Branch in operations. He negotiated across commands to source Chaplain Units for war. He was promoted to Colonel for the hard work he provided to the command. He was later medically discharged from wounds caused by the enemy and received a Purple Heart. He learned from this experience that the power of writing to aid soldiers is mighty.
He waited for God’s timing, who recently provoked him to tell his story louder than at coffee shops about his deadly experience as a Technical Scuba Diver and underwater photographer. His passion is to inspire humanity that God can do anything. He is humble to present “Raised to Walk” to encourage those who suffer in this life and those who want to enrich their lives for the good of others. It humbles him to write his vulnerabilities and what God had done for him.
Chaplain Starnes continues to inspire others and listen to strangers’ stories. His passion is helping people experiencing poverty, and the proceeds from “Raised to Walk” and photos will go to charity and to taxes.
